As the name gives away, this is the process of designing for a small screen first, before adding more content and features to create a more enhanced version. Although it’s not a new approach, with around 60 per cent of internet access now on mobile and Google penalising websites that aren’t optimised for small screens, it simply can’t be left as an afterthought any more. Having a smaller platform forces you to focus on delivering what is essential, and builds a better user experience by encouraging you to really consider a user’s behaviour. This, in turn, helps you determine the best strategy for your brand.

Stock photography is all well and good, but what does it actually tell the audience about your brand? Very little! 2017 will be the year we finally see the decline of the notorious ‘women laughing with salads’ shots. It’s such a simple change, but adding custom photos to your website that are in line with your brand identity will instil a sense of authenticity and character. Think of photography as a visual language and consider what it says about you!


Again, this isn’t new, but is still a massively under-utilised tool. If a picture paints a thousand words, think what you can say with video content! 98 per cent of users have watched a video that explains a product or service, so if embedded on a homepage, a video is highly effective, especially on a mobile site where space is at a premium. Eye-catching and dynamic, this year will be filled with rich, interactive content that is proven to boost conversion rates, encourage social shares, and push websites further to the top of search engines.


Okay, so maybe it sounds contradictory, but yep – simplicity is a key trend for 2017. Scaling back your site works in a similar way to mobile-first development, in that you have to focus on your key messages and what you want to convey to the audience. A clean home page with simplistic imagery and bold text will put your USPs at the forefront and immediately communicate your brand. Implementing a minimalistic design means that navigation is easier, conversion is better, and the site is more responsive – definitely worth de-cluttering for!
