Space, the final frontier… FOR AMAZING PR STUNTS!

Once you’ve conquered the globe, the only way is up – and up, and up, and up. That’s certainly the case for Rovio Entertainment – the makers of Angry Birds – which confirmed the details of its new ‘Space’ version of the popular game by getting flight engineer, Don Pettit, to introduce it from the International Space Station!

The announcement came complete with a live demonstration and illustrates a partnership that is truly out of this world. This is the first time a game announcement and game play footage has ever been filmed from space. So, how did all this come about you may ask – Twitter of course!

“This collaboration began with a simple Twitter exchange about birds and pigs in space, and it has grown into a tremendous outreach and education opportunity,” says NASA’s associate administrator for communications David Weaver.

“Games are fun and entertaining, but they also can be inspirational and informative. This ongoing collaboration with Rovio and Angry Birds is an exciting way to get people engaged with NASA’s missions of exploration and discovery, and get students energized about future careers in science and technology.”

This may be true – and Don Pettit’s explanation regarding the physics of the bird’s movements in space is certainly informative – but it’s also a damn good PR stunt.

Whilst I highly doubt that Rovio are worrying too much about downloads of this latest installment to the Angry Birds phenomenon, this little exercise is sure to see them rocket!
