The Lawns at Spinningfields were transformed into a volleyball court yesterday, as Greater Manchester charity, GreaterSport, and Volleyball England joined forces to get Manchester’s workers active.

The Peppermints were out in force to support GreaterSport, and we even had a turn at ‘spiking’ ourselves – safe to say, the professionals’ day jobs are secure for now!

Despite the Manchester weather, which played up to its reputation by throwing it down with rain all day, the event was a runaway success, with people from all walks of life jumping onto the court to try out this amazing sport for themselves.

More importantly, they walked away armed with information on the Greater Manchester Workplace Games. This monthly sporting event, organised by GreaterSport, aims to get teams of co-workers from across Greater Manchester to get together and try a new sport as they compete against each other in a battle for gold.

The November games – to be held on 26 November at Salford City Academy – is all about volleyball, and companies can sign up teams of four to six players from now up until 20 November.

Volleyball was one of the fastest-selling events of the 2012 London Olympics and, while that may have had something to do with the fact that the beach teams played in bikinis, it’s been growing in popularity ever since.

A high energy yet non-contact sport, volleyball’s ideal for those who don’t necessarily consider themselves ‘sporty’. Teams can be mixed gender and of any age, so it’s perfect for colleagues who want to get active but can’t agree on a sport to pursue.

The next games will be held after work so there’s no excuse not to get involved. Visit www.greatersport.co.uk/workplacegames to book your team place.

The Peppermints will definitely be there, regardless of our questionable volleyball skills. Will we see you there, too?
