Thoughts of a CIPR virgin…

I was a ‘first-timer’ at the CIPR PRide Awards in Manchester last night and didn’t quite know what to expect. Would the event live up to the PR industry’s stereotype of lots of champagne-quaffing luvvies, or would it be a more sedate and demure affair?

Actually, it was neither. If those who like to take a swipe at the industry had been at last night’s ceremony, they might have had cause to alter their perception of public relations. What I saw was a dazzling showcase of the verve, creativity and intelligence that make our industry shine.

And, of course, I got to cheer on my fellow Peppermints as they collected silver awards in the Corporate and Business Communications and Best Campaign £10K and Under categories – not to mention making what I hope will be the first of many trips to the stage as we all went up to receive our Outstanding Public Relations Consultancy silver award.

Having moved from an eight-year career in teaching, I’m relatively new to the world of PR – but I recognise excellence when I see it. I’ve not worked anywhere else where there’s such a diverse range of talent, with each member of the Peppermint team bringing their own particular skills and insight to the mix. Combine all of those elements together and you have something very special.

Seeing all of the ingenuity that was being celebrated at last night’s awards made me feel proud to be there and to be a part of it all.
