In the digital age, leveraging social media and digital platforms is essential. These platforms offer the ability to reach large audiences quickly and engage with them interactively. During the COVID-19 pandemic, social media was used extensively to disseminate information, combat misinformation, and provide updates.

The “Get Vaccinated” campaign utilised platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to share accurate information about vaccine safety and efficacy. Similarly, during the COVID-19 pandemic, data on infection rates, vaccine uptake, and public sentiment guided the communication strategies to address emerging issues and concerns.

Addressing misinformation

Misinformation can undermine healthcare campaigns and public trust. Proactively addressing misinformation through transparent, evidence-based communication is essential. During the COVID-19 pandemic, misinformation about the virus and vaccines spread rapidly, prompting public health agencies to launch dedicated efforts to combat false information.

The UK’s NHS launched a “Check before you share” campaign to encourage the public to verify information from trusted sources before sharing it on social media. This initiative helped reduce the spread of misinformation and reinforced the importance of accurate information (NHS, 2021).
