Eyebrows raised over Sarah Brown’s apostrophe cock-up

Sarah Brown, PR consultant and wife of the PM, has exposed a sloppy grasp of English punctuation. Diplomats are reported to be appalled that she’s sent out a letter to partners of world leaders, referring to the next leader’s summit [sic].

They’re right – she should have known better.  It’s embarrassingly obvious to state that any junior executive working in PR should have a proper, full command of the English language – let alone a high level consultant who ran her own PR consultancy.  That the letter was sent to eminent figures from across the globe throws a humiliating spotlight on our standard of English.

Sarah’s mistake, sadly, is very, very far from unusual.  The disconcerting fact is that an astonishing number of people working in this industry are unable to write simple English using basic punctuation.  One of our raison d’êtres is to communicate cogently, compellingly and correctly on our clients’ behalf.  And  taking the trouble to put an apostrophe in the correct place is not too much to ask.  Is it?
